Strong Jobs Data Puts the Fed Back Under Pressure
A stronger-than-expected US jobs report is shifting market expectations around the Federal Reserve's next move, with investors increasingly concerned that interest rates may remain higher for longer.
The labor market remains a key factor in the Fed's monetary policy decisions. If employment and wage growth stay stronger than expected, inflation could remain persistent, making policymakers more cautious about cutting rates.
For crypto and financial markets, this creates an important challenge:
Bitcoin: Could face selling pressure as expectations of tighter monetary policy increase.
Ethereum and altcoins: Higher interest rates could weaken demand for riskier assets.
US dollar: Could gain strength if markets price in a more hawkish Fed.
Treasury yields: May rise as investors adjust their rate expectations.
Why this matters now
According to the November 6 jobs report, the US added 165,000 jobs in October, against expectations of approximately 65,000. Unemployment also declined to 4.1%.
Markets subsequently raised the probability of a 25-basis-point Fed rate hike in December to around 80%, according to Reuters.
My take: The next major catalyst is US inflation data. If inflation remains stubborn while employment stays strong, the Fed could maintain a tighter monetary stance, creating further uncertainty for crypto markets.
