$1,180 broke on Nov 3 — I had it as the line that had to hold, and $ZEC flushed to $1,128. I was wrong on that level, and I'm saying it first because the recovery only makes sense if you saw the dip.
Three days later the same coin is $1,323.50, up 4.32% today, and the reason is real: NU7 went live on Nov 6 at 02:34 UTC, block 3,543,405. Blocks now target 25 seconds instead of 75. Sixty percent of fees go into a reserve for future mining rewards. And the original 2016 Sprout privacy pool is retired — about 12,224 ZEC left in it can never be spent again.
Here's the psychology part, and it's the whole trade. The Nov 3 drop wasn't about the upgrade at all. It was a fight over who controls the grants money — Zcash Community Grants, a 98,000 ZEC proposal, withdrawn after community pushback. Traders sold the argument, not the tech. Then the tech shipped on schedule and the same sellers had to buy back. Finnhub's fresh numbers put ZEC at $1,323.50 today, high $1,388, low $1,256.65, on $1.3B of volume — real volume, not a thin pump. That's a 17% round trip from the $1,128 low in four days.
I kept staring at that gap between the story and the price. The story said "governance mess." The price said "upgrade ships anyway." When those two disagree, I trust the one with a block height attached to it.
But I'm leaning, not strong — and here's why. ZEC is still 22% below its Sep 27 all-time high of $1,697.45. The grants fight isn't settled either: Dev Fund proposals are due Nov 8, polling runs Nov 16–30, and that argument can flare up again. And look at the room we're in: $BTC is flat at ~$75,988 with Fear & Greed at 25, Extreme Fear. A privacy coin can run green in a fearful market — it just did — but if BTC loses $74,888, ZEC won't be spared.
The plan, with levels I can defend:
Entry zone $1,300–$1,323, around where it trades now. TP1 $1,388 (today's high), TP2 $1,398 (the Oct 30 wall), TP3 $1,459 (top of this week's expected range). Stop below $1,247, the 24-hour low. Take half off at TP1, a quarter each at TP2 and TP3, move the stop to entry once TP1 hits. Keep size light — this is a leaning setup in an Extreme Fear market, not a conviction swing.
If $1,388 breaks, the $1,398 wall is next and the ATH conversation starts. If $1,247 gives way, the recovery story is wrong and $1,180 is the retest — a daily close below $1,180 kills the setup outright, same as Nov 3 did to my last one.
The next update comes the moment $1,388 breaks or $1,247 fails — whichever prints first.
Would you chase ZEC above $1,388, or wait for a retest of $1,300 first — and what's your invalidation level? Drop it below.
