If You're a Day Trader, You Need to Know These 3 Formulas!

Stop choosing 20x, 50x, or 100x leverage just because you want bigger profits.

A professional trader should know exactly how much risk to take and what leverage to use for every trade.

1. Determine Your Win Rate and Risk/Reward Ratio (RR)

Backtest your strategy to identify:

- Win Rate (WR): Percentage of winning trades.
- Risk/Reward (RR): Potential reward relative to the risk taken.

These two metrics help determine whether your trading strategy has a statistical edge.

2. Calculate Your Optimal Risk Per Trade

You can use the Kelly Criterion:

f^*=WR-\frac{1-WR}{RR}

Where:

- WR = Win Rate (decimal format).
- RR = Risk/Reward ratio.
- (f^*) = Theoretically optimal fraction of capital to risk.

However, Full Kelly can be extremely aggressive. I recommend using Half Kelly (50% of the calculated value) to reduce volatility and the risk of major drawdowns.

3. Calculate the Appropriate Leverage for Each Trade

Once you have determined your risk, calculate leverage based on your Stop Loss distance:

Leverage=\frac{Risk%}{SL%}

For example:

- Maximum account risk: 2%.
- Stop Loss distance: 0.5%.

Leverage=\frac{2%}{0.5%}=4x

If your Stop Loss distance is only 0.2%, the required leverage becomes 10x for the same account risk.

Note: This formula assumes your entire account equity is allocated as margin. If you use only part of your capital as margin, the calculation must account for that.

Final thoughts:

Don't choose leverage first and look for an entry afterward.

Determine your trading edge → calculate your risk → identify your Stop Loss distance → then choose your leverage.

A professional trader doesn't need the highest leverage. They need the right leverage to maximize long-term growth while keeping risk under control.

Trade smart. Protect your capital. Stay consistent.
