$ETH is up 6.4% in 24h and $BTC is back above 80K. Before you open a leveraged long on that green, check the one number most people skip: funding.
Quick lesson on funding rates:
Perpetual futures have no expiry, so exchanges use funding to keep the perp price close to spot. Every few hours, one side pays the other.
• Positive funding → longs pay shorts. The crowd is leaning long.
• Negative funding → shorts pay longs. The crowd is leaning short.
Why it matters:
1. It's a cost. Holding a leveraged long through several funding windows when rates are high quietly eats into your PnL, even if price goes nowhere.
2. It's sentiment. Very high positive funding after a fast move means a lot of late longs. If price stalls, those positions become fuel for a flush down.
3. It's not a timing signal by itself. Funding can stay elevated for days in a strong trend. Use it with price structure and volume, not alone.
A sensible rule of thumb: after a sharp pump like ETH's run from 2,276 to 2,450 in a day, if funding looks stretched, size smaller and define your stop before entry instead of chasing.
Do you check funding before opening a perp position?
Not financial advice.
