# USTC’s Failed Repeg: Four Years On

Since Terra collapsed in May 2022, the community has sought to restore USTC’s $1 peg.

# Current Picture
$USTC trades at $0.0047–0.005, with a ~$26M market cap and ~5.57B circulating supply. Reaching $1 requires a 200-fold rise.

# Repeg Plans
In 2022, Edward Kim and Alex Forshaw called ~9.5B USTC bad debt. USTN proposed Bitcoin-backed reserves funded by new LUNC; Zaradar favored tightening supply without minting. Developers explored gradual repegging; a 100% swap tax halted new minting.

Validators approved Market Module 2.0 in 2025, a non-minting $LUNC /USTC swap redesign. It remains inactive pending another vote. Full repeg has shifted to 2027 or later, with no firm date.

# Why It Failed
Collateral: LUNC’s ~$250M market cap cannot back 5.57B USTC at $1 (~$5.5B needed). The old model risks another death spiral. Module 2.0 improves swaps, not the peg.

Demand: UST relied on unsustainable ~20% Anchor yields. Few have reason to choose USTC over fully backed USDT or USDC.

Governance/regulation: No funded central team leads Terra Classic; volunteers and votes slow progress. MiCA and the US GENIUS Act favor fully backed stablecoins. KuCoin delisted USTC in Europe in March 2026; Binance reportedly did so in Brazil.

Supply risk: Terraform bankruptcy-linked wallets may hold large amounts; sale plans are unclear.

# Outlook
Recovery needs external collateral, real payment/DeFi demand and funding.

Module 2.0 may be delayed or have limited impact, leaving USTC volatile below one cent. Staking and burns could lift price, but not restore the peg. A new collateralized asset with conversion rights may be more realistic, without guaranteeing $1.

# ForExxKripto View
Terra Classic’s survival and upgrades deserve recognition. But USTC is a high-risk speculative asset, not a stablecoin. Its test is sustainable demand—not burns.

Can USTC repeg, or who would need it?
