Late Sunday, BTCPay Server sent an urgent warning: attackers were sweeping hot wallets on live instances. Their advice was blunt. Shut it down until the investigation is done.
Hours later they found the hole.
• The attack targets instances on version 2.4.1 (July 23, 2026) or older
• No credible reports of drains on the latest 2.4.7 release
• Some hosting providers already shut down outdated instances automatically
As BTCPay put it, "Bitcoin wasn't broken." Old software was.
After the Binance hack, this is the second reminder in one week that hot wallets are where the risk lives, whether you're a $171B exchange or a coffee shop taking $BTC.
