If the hackers who hit Binance had attacked a much smaller exchange instead, would you ever see your money again?
Think about that before you trade.
The Binance attack is estimated at around $6.3 billion — the largest crypto theft ever reported. Blockchain investigators have linked it with high confidence to North Korea-linked hackers. Around $3 billion has already been frozen, and Binance says it will cover customer losses.
But the bigger lesson is NOT Binance.
It is exchange survival.
ASK THESE QUESTIONS
How much does my exchange hold?
How much of that is customer assets?
How much is actually protected 1:1?
Does it have an emergency fund?
Could it survive a multi-billion-dollar attack?
And most importantly:
If something goes wrong tomorrow, who pays me?
Mt. Gox showed what happens when an exchange cannot make customers whole.
FTX showed how dangerous it is when customer funds are not properly protected.
Bybit showed that even a massive hack does not automatically mean customers lose everything.
The difference is not simply the size of the hack.
It is what stands behind the customer when the wall is breached.
Binance currently says its customer assets are backed 1:1 and that it maintains SAFU for extreme events.
But retail traders should never stop at an exchange's marketing page.
Check the reserves.
Check the liabilities.
Check the history.
Check how the exchange handled previous crises.
And never assume that because an exchange is large, it is impossible to fail.
MY MESSAGE TO RETAIL TRADERS
I'm not telling you to leave Binance.
I'm not telling you to trust another exchange.
I'm telling you to do your own stress test.
Because keeping 100% of your crypto on one exchange is also a risk.
The next attack may target a smaller exchange.
And a $6.3B attack against a smaller wall could have a very different ending.
Your biggest question should not only be:
“Where will BTC go tomorrow?”
It should also be:
“If my exchange has its worst day tomorrow, where exactly is my money?”
Have you ever checked your exchange's Proof of Reserves?
