Reddit is abandoning its 21-year tradition as an open web platform and pivoting to a primarily logged-in experience, CEO Steve Huffman and COO Jen Wong confirmed.

The homepage will remain accessible to logged-out visitors, and users can still browse anonymously after signing in. The shift marks a dramatic reversal for a platform that built its identity on open access and became one of the internet's largest discussion forums without requiring accounts.

No timeline was disclosed for the rollout.
