Moody's just gave a stablecoin a credit rating. That's a bigger deal than it sounds.
Moody's assigned Ripple's $RLUSD an A2 long-term and P-1 short-term deposit rating. The rating covers native RLUSD on the XRP Ledger and Ethereum. RLUSD itself is issued by Standard Custody & Trust Company, a Ripple subsidiary. Coverage of the move cites reserves held mostly in US Treasuries and cash.
My take: this isn't a marketing badge, it's plumbing. Treasurers, funds and banks often can't touch an asset that has no rating from a major agency. A2/P-1 gives their risk teams a familiar language for "how safe is this dollar token," right next to the Ripple x BNY custody news from earlier this week.
Two things worth keeping in mind:
- Moody's explicitly weighs holders' exposure if the issuer goes bankrupt. A2 is solid investment grade, not "risk-free."
- RLUSD is still roughly a $2.6B market cap (CoinGecko). A rating opens doors; it doesn't guarantee anyone walks through them.
For $XRP, the read-through is indirect. XRP trades near $1.33 (+2% in 24h), with a 24h range of about $1.29 to $1.34. I'm watching $1.36 to $1.40 as resistance and $1.26 as support, with tonight's Fed decision as the bigger short-term driver.
Do ratings like this matter more to you than TVL or growth numbers?
