Bitcoin didn't hold $80K. It got rescued there — three days in a row.
And this morning, the rescue hasn't shown up yet. $BTC is trading near $79,700, back under the line before the Fed even speaks.
On Kraken, Bitcoin closed at $80,772 on Friday, $80,049 on Saturday, and $80,002 on Sunday — three closes above $80K, but each day buyers had to drag it back from intraday lows of $79,121, $79,750 and $79,265. Each defence weaker than the last. That's not strength. That's exhaustion.
Tomorrow is the test. The Fed announces Wednesday 28 October at 2:00 p.m. ET, with the press conference at 2:30 p.m. ET. The decision is already priced in — markets put a hold at roughly 90% or higher. What isn't priced in is the guidance.
History is blunt: Bitcoin has fallen within two days of 8 of the last 9 FOMC meetings, and the damage rarely came from the rate itself. It came from the tone. In December 2024 the Fed cut rates and Bitcoin still fell, because the dot plot turned hawkish. A hold tomorrow with a firm December-hike signal would be the same trap in reverse.
ETF money already blinked: spot Bitcoin ETFs took in about $1.08 billion Monday to Wednesday last week, then gave back $774 million on Thursday and Friday — a $636 million single-day outflow on Thursday, the biggest since June. The week still finished $301 million net positive, but the direction into this week is down.
The buyers are splitting in two. Retail deposits to Binance hit a six-month high of $10.75 billion over 30 days — small holders using the bounce as an exit window. Whale deposits fell about 36% to $3.8 billion over two months: not distributing, but not catching the knife either. And on Monday, two dormant whales deposited 2,571 BTC to Coinbase Prime after roughly three years quiet. Deposits aren't sales — but they are supply parked by the exit door.
Worst of all, the ammunition is thinning: stablecoin reserves on exchanges sat at $60.62 billion on 24 October, a 12-month low. Even Strategy bought zero Bitcoin last week — its stack unchanged at 848,517 BTC. A missing bid, not a sale.
Here are the levels that matter. Reclaim $80,700, then $81,300, then $82,500 — Bitfinex and Wintermute both flag $82,500 as the line that ends this consolidation. Lose a daily close below $80K and that's the first confirmed break, not just another wick — with $76,000 the next downside reference. And check $ETH alongside it: if Ether breaks with Bitcoin, that's risk-off across the board.
So here's my take: $80K isn't a floor anymore. It's a countdown. A soft tone tomorrow plus steady ETF flows, and this scare is forgotten by the weekend. A firm December-hike signal, one more big ETF outflow day, or a weak Big Tech earnings print — and the rescue act ends with a close below $80K nobody can unsee.
Tap $BTC and watch the close tonight. The wick doesn't matter anymore. The close does.
