Delivering large files can consume significant network capacity, storage, and operational resources. The costs depend on the hosting arrangement, demand, infrastructure pricing, and the characteristics of the release.

Peer-to-peer distribution can shift some transfer activity to participating peers, which may reduce the amount of data that must be served directly by the original publisher in certain circumstances.

That does not mean the total cost disappears. Participants use their own bandwidth and equipment, and publishers may still need hosting, coordination, support, and reliable official information.

A realistic cost assessment looks at the whole system rather than one bill. BitTorrent can be part of that discussion when the potential benefits are weighed against the practical requirements and costs of supporting a release.
