NOTE: INFORMATIVE FOR BEGINNERS:

Guys digital arrest is one of the digital fraud techniques/online scams in which fraudsters target individuals or businesses, posing as law enforcement or government agencies such as CBI, ED, RBI or Police. The targeted individuals are accused of alleged tax evasion, crimes like money laundering, drug trafficking or financial misconduct.

They use fear and isolation tactics to extort money under the pretext of “bail” or “security deposit.”

To withdraw the digital arrest or free the concerned individual, fraudsters put them under pressure for making the payment.

Modus Operandi

a) Trigger: You receive a call, SMS, or email from someone claiming to be an official from law enforcement.

b) Deception:

Fraudster alleges that you are linked to criminal activity and threatens arrest unless immediate action is taken.

You are then connected to a “higher officer” via video call with fake official backdrops, through platforms like WhatsApp and Skype.

c) Execution:

You are told that you are under “digital arrest” and must stay on the call.

Fraudsters send fake documents, IDs, and legal notices to create legitimacy.

The concerned individual is coerced to transfer money as bail, security deposit, or penalty fees.

d) Exploitation:

Funds are transferred via UPI, bank accounts, or mule accounts, leaving the targeted individual isolated and unable to verify. Fraudsters end the call once money is received.
