Switzerland Opens the Door to Bitcoin for Individual Investors with its First ETF

Analysts at Santiment believe that the first Bitcoin ETF available to individuals in Switzerland is not just an additional product, but a new gateway that brings Bitcoin into the investment channels familiar to the average investor.

What makes it special?

This week, the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) approved the first publicly traded Bitcoin ETF available to all investors, after the previous Swiss ETF was restricted to professional investors.

Santiment also pointed out that most European cryptocurrency-related products are legally classified as debt securities, while the new ETF is subject to Swiss collective investment fund regulations.

This allows investors direct exposure to Bitcoin within a regulated framework, without the need for platform management, wallets, or redemption clauses.

The authority granted an exception to the usual diversification rules, citing Bitcoin's relatively long history and high liquidity.

However, it also warned that Bitcoin remains highly volatile and could cause significant losses.

According to Santiment, the fund's significance lies not in the amount of Bitcoin it can hold, but in expanding its base of potential investors.

Investors who would never open an account on a cryptocurrency exchange can now buy Bitcoin through their regular bank account, and wealth managers gain a new, regulated product to offer their clients.

The report suggests that the first phase of Bitcoin funds was making them available in traditional markets, while the second phase focuses on adapting them for different segments:

Individuals, advisors, retirees, and less risk-averse portfolios.
