Analysts at Santiment believe that the first publicly available Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) in Switzerland is not just another product, but a new gateway that brings Bitcoin into the investment channels familiar to the average investor.
What makes it special?
This week, the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) approved the first publicly available Bitcoin ETF, open to all investors. Previously, the Swiss ETF was only accessible to professional investors.
Santiment also noted that most European cryptocurrency-related products are legally classified as debt securities, while the new ETF is subject to Swiss collective investment fund regulations.
This allows investors direct exposure to Bitcoin within a regulated framework, without the need for platform management, wallets, or redemption mechanisms.
FINMA granted an exception to the usual diversification rules, citing Bitcoin's relatively long history and high liquidity.
However, it also cautioned that Bitcoin remains highly volatile and could result in significant losses.
According to Santiment, the ETF's significance lies not in the amount of Bitcoin it can hold, but in expanding the potential investor base.
An investor who would never open an account on a cryptocurrency platform can now buy Bitcoin through their regular bank account, and wealth managers gain a new regulated product to offer their clients.
The report suggests that the first phase of Bitcoin funds was making them available in traditional markets, while the second phase focuses on adapting them for different segments:
Individuals, advisors, retirees, and less risk-averse portfolios.
