The IRS just signaled a softer door for crypto tax cleanup, and the timing matters more than the headline.
IRS Criminal Investigation Chief Jarod Koopman told a UCLA tax conference that a revised Voluntary Disclosure Practice is planned before December. The target: resolve cases within 120 days after a taxpayer completes the required submissions, versus a process that can drag on for a year or longer today. Penalties are expected to be lower (no figures yet), with installment plans or offers in compromise on the table. Crypto won't get its own track; it goes through the same general program.
My take: this is a carrot before the stick. Broker reporting via Form 1099-DA is arriving, which means far more on-chain and exchange activity becomes visible to the IRS. Making disclosure cheaper and faster now is a classic way to pull people in before enforcement data piles up.
Two caveats worth remembering. First, the VDP is designed for willful noncompliance with criminal exposure, not honest reporting mistakes; those are usually fixed with amended returns. Second, nothing is final until the program is published.
For the market, this won't move $BTC on its own, especially with price fighting the $80K zone. But clearer tax paths are part of what brings cautious capital on-chain over time.
Keep records. Talk to a tax pro if this applies to you.
