$NIL : Blind Compute or Hidden Latency & Adoption Risks?
At first, running AI and DeFi on encrypted data sounded like a clean answer to privacy. Looking closer, the protection is paid for in time. Multi-party computation splits data into shares across nodes, so every operation needs coordination and bandwidth that ordinary cloud processing avoids. My view is that Nillion doesn't remove the cost of trust. It trades part of it for latency.
The threshold adds a second cost. Secret sharing holds only while fewer than k nodes collude, so security depends on who operates the nodes, not just the mathematics.
Developers then decide whether privacy justifies a heavier stack than familiar centralized tools. That suggests a trade-off between encryption strength and real-time usability. Some uses, like private order books or sensitive records, may tolerate delay; real-time apps may not.
Can the network scale for real-time apps without letting speed erode the privacy it promises?
