A major regulatory milestone just landed — and stablecoin users need to understand what it actually means. 👀
The U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) has finalized rules implementing the GENIUS Act, with the framework set to take effect on January 18, 2027.
⚡ WHAT CHANGED?
💵 1️⃣ TWO-BUSINESS-DAY REDEMPTION
The final rule keeps a baseline requirement for covered issuers to process redemption requests within two business days. Issuers may redeem sooner, but generally cannot take longer without an approved extension.
🏦 2️⃣ NO AUTOMATIC SEVEN-DAY EXTENSION
The final framework does not retain the proposed automatic seven-day extension. Requests for additional time are subject to regulatory oversight rather than being automatically granted.
🛡️ 3️⃣ RESERVES & RISK CONTROLS
The rules also establish requirements covering reserve assets, risk management, audits, reporting, custody, and supervision for issuers within the OCC’s jurisdiction.
📊 WHY THIS MATTERS
✅ Clearer redemption standards could strengthen confidence in regulated payment stablecoins.
✅ Reserve and reporting requirements could improve transparency and oversight.
⚠️ But faster redemption rules do not eliminate every risk. Access to redemption can depend on eligibility, issuer procedures, banking arrangements, and the rules applicable to a particular stablecoin.
