Solana just swapped out its consensus engine. So why is $SOL still drifting?
Alpenglow went live on mainnet on Oct 21, replacing TowerBFT. Validators now vote directly to each other and bundle votes into certificates, with a finality target of roughly 150 ms versus about 12.8 seconds before. Anza's CEO called it the most ambitious blockchain upgrade since The Merge.
The X timeline is treating it like a done deal, but I'd separate the target from the reality. Right after the switch, the Foundation's dashboard showed about 6.6-second finality, so 150 ms is still a design goal, not a measured result. Rotor, the second phase, isn't even scheduled yet. Also note: votes no longer show up as transactions, so before/after TPS comparisons can mislead.
Price tells the same cautious story. SOL hovered around $106-108 at activation and X market chatter has it near $104 today, while US spot Solana ETFs saw net outflows in 13 of 14 October sessions (about $64M). Meanwhile, J.P. Morgan just brought two tokenized money market funds to Solana. Institutions are building; fund flows aren't following yet.
My view: Alpenglow is a long-term fundamental win, not a short-term catalyst. I'd watch real finality numbers and ETF flows over the next few weeks before calling a trend change.
Do faster settlements change how you value SOL?
