Let's go back to the period between 2014 and 2017 when a massive investment fraud was orchestred in China by Zhimin Qian nicknamed the " Goodness of Wealth "

The scheme reportedly allowed her to defraud numerous victims before moving part of her assets including nearly 61 000 BTC along with other assets and valuables out of China.

A few years later British authorities tracked down some of these assets and seized them. In November 2025 Zhimin Qian was sentenced to 11 years and 8 months in prison for money laundering.

The case led British authorities to seize assets linked to the fraud including the famous Bitcoin stash.

🇨🇳 But now China wants those assets back

Chinese authorities are seeking to assert their rights over the assets seized in the UK relying in part on Chinese law and ongoing legal proceedings

Why are these 61000 BTC so important ?

At current valuations these Bitcoins are worth approximately $5.1 billion that’s an enormous amount of money making this legal battle particularly significant.

But there's another important factor to consider : victim compensation

If the assets are recovered by Chinese authorities how the funds are distributed and how the victims are compensated will be crucial. If victims are repaid in yuan questions may arise about what happens to the difference between the value of the recovered assets and the amounts actually paid to victims.
