Divergence is one of the most recognizable concepts in technical analysis. Price makes a new high while an oscillator produces a lower high, or price makes a new low while the indicator refuses to follow. The visual disagreement immediately attracts attention because it appears to suggest that the move is losing strength.

The difficulty is that divergence can persist for much longer than traders expect. a strong uptrend where price continues advancing while RSI gradually produces lower peaks. A trader might interpret the first divergence as evidence that the top is close, yet price can continue making new highs several times before any meaningful decline develops.

This happens partly because the indicator and price are measuring different things

An oscillator does not need to make a new high every time price does. If the earlier advance was exceptionally fast, it may have generated an extreme momentum reading that becomes difficult to exceed. Price can later continue rising at a slower but still sustainable pace, producing higher prices without recreating the same indicator extrem

The divergence is mathematically real, but its interpretation is not automatically bearish.e.. same issue appears during declines. Price can continue making lower lows while downside momentum becomes progressively less extreme. That tells the trader something about the rate of movement, but it does not prove that buyers have gained enough control to reverse the trend. This distinction changes how divergence can be used

Instead of treating disagreement between price and an indicator as an immediate entry signal, it can be viewed as a reason to examine the movement more carefully. Is price still progressing efficiently? What happens after each new extreme? Has anything actually changed on the chart beyond the oscillator readin

Divergence becomes more meaningful when subsequent price behavior begins supporting the same idea. Without that additional evidence, a trader can spend a long time attempting to trade against a trend simply because an indicator stopped matching every new extrem

Indicators can show that momentum is changing

They cannot guarantee when, or even whether, that change will become a reversal..e.g?
