Research published by DeFiLlama in August 2026 identified 100 projects that had announced shutdowns in 2026, including 40 in the preceding 90 days. The most commonly cited reasons were a lack of product-market fit, insufficient funding, and weak revenue generation.
The projects collectively raised about $1 billion and generated $250 million in cumulative fees highlighting how substantial fundraising does not guarantee long-term commercial viability.
Security failures have also contributed to the closures.
Step Finance shut down following a major treasury breach while
Radiant Capital opted to wind down after failing to recover from a 2024 exploit.
Satori Finance, meanwhile, cited insufficient revenue to sustain operations.
REALITY CHECK | ~80% of Crypto Projects Don’t Bounce Back After a Hack
The shutdowns come as crypto venture funding becomes increasingly concentrated.
DeFiLlama data showed the number of investment deals fell 80% in the first half of 2026 from a year earlier despite an increase in total funding. Mergers and acquisitions also accelerated with 87 transactions recorded at the time of the report, up 65% year-on-year.
The trend points to growing pressure on crypto businesses to demonstrate
sustainable revenue,
user demand, and
viable operating models
as access to capital becomes more selective.
