🚨 GOOGLE PUSHES QUANTUM COMPUTING FORWARD, COINBASE RAISES CONCERNS… AND OLD BITCOINS COULD BE IN TROUBLE!
Imagine holding Bitcoin since 2010, keeping your keys safe for 16 years… only to discover that one day, protecting your funds might depend less on your password and more on how much time remains before sufficiently powerful quantum computers arrive.
🧪 Google has reached a new milestone.
With its Willow processor, the tech giant says a new method has reduced certain quantum errors by roughly 40 times.
This doesn't mean Bitcoin can be hacked today. But overcoming these technical challenges is essential to building more powerful quantum machines.
And Coinbase is already taking the issue seriously.
According to its advisory board, approximately 6.9 million BTC could potentially be exposed to future quantum attacks, particularly because some public keys are visible on the blockchain.
Some Bitcoin attributed to Satoshi Nakamoto could be among the affected holdings.
Satoshi, if you're reading this, it might be time to consider a little upgrade. 👻
⏳ The real challenge is collective.
Google is targeting 2029 for its own transition to post-quantum cryptography. That is not a prediction of when Bitcoin could become vulnerable to quantum attacks.
Bitcoin will also need to consider new signature schemes, coordinate their adoption, and find a solution for coins that cannot be moved.
And unlike Google, nobody can simply hit "Update" for the entire network.
So the question isn't just when quantum computers will be ready, but whether Bitcoin will manage to adapt before they are.
