Liquidity is more than a TVL
number Liquidity describes how easily an asset can be bought or sold without moving its price too much. It is not the same thing as total value locked (TVL).
TVL estimates the value of assets deposited in a protocol at a given time. It can help show the scale of deposits, but it does not tell you exactly how much can be traded at a particular price. A pool may have a high TVL while a large swap still creates significant price impact.
To assess a decentralized market, look at several indicators together: pool depth, recent trading volume, spread or price impact for the trade size you care about, and how liquidity is distributed. Also consider whether liquidity is concentrated in a few pools or dependent on incentives that could change.
Metrics have limitations and can be reported differently across data providers. Compare definitions and timestamps before drawing conclusions.
TVL answers “how much value is deposited?” Liquidity asks “how easily can this asset be traded at a given price?”
