Everyone's busy panic-selling AI stocks. Meanwhile, the decentralized AI network just shipped one of its biggest upgrades of the year — and almost nobody noticed.
On October 16, Bittensor introduced "Null Consensus," a simpler highest-stake evaluation model that lifts subnet capacity from 256 miners to up to 2,500 per reward mechanism. Translation: subnets can now scale into much larger data, compute, and service networks without breaking their reward logic. Days earlier, Subnet 3 upgraded its model from ~1B to 8B parameters and started testing a 24B looped-transformer architecture.
This isn't vaporware narrative. It's builders shipping while the price is on sale.
$TAO trades around $275 today, giving back part of its run to $289.20 at the October 16 close. That puts it ~64% below its $757.60 all-time high from March 2024 — and right on top of the level that decides what happens next.
The line in the sand is $265–$269, where the 50-day average sits (~$268). Hold it, and the path back toward $284–$288 opens up, then $296–$301, with the bigger breakout level at ~$340. Lose it on a daily close, and the bear path points to $250, then $242. Check $TAO's chart at that $265 line; that's where this move gets decided.
The institutional side is quietly moving the other way. Grayscale's Bittensor Trust issued 253,100 new shares to accredited investors in a filing dated October 13 — about 4,778 TAO (~$1.45M) of fresh demand — and earlier this month added Coinbase Prime as a second custodian. No ETF approval exists yet; the conversion filing is still pending. But institutions don't usually build plumbing for assets they've written off.
Here's what this really means. The AI-token sector already showed in September what rotation looks like — AI crypto gained 54% that month per Grayscale Research. $FET and the rest of the AI pack move with the same tide. The difference for Bittensor is structure: 21M max supply, a mid-December 2025 halving that cut daily issuance to 3,600 TAO, and reportedly ~64% of supply staked (TokenPost, Oct 15). A tight float cuts both ways — it amplifies rallies and sell-offs alike.
Be honest about the risks: unaudited estimates put subnet revenue in the tens of millions a year against roughly $300M in annual emissions. The network is still an incentive economy becoming a real economy, not one yet. And with $BTC holding ~$81K in a risk-off macro tape, $TAO remains the higher-beta leg — it falls harder when sentiment turns.
So watch $265. If it holds while builders keep shipping and institutions keep accumulating, this dip gets remembered as the quiet part. If it breaks, the market gets its cheaper entry.
