MSCI has adopted new eligibility rules that could remove Bitcoin treasury company Strategy from major global equity indexes. The framework targets companies whose finances resemble investment funds rather than operating businesses. #Strategy and Japan’s Metaplanet are among the potential removals, while #SharpLink is on a watchlist.
The final list is due November 11, with the changes taking effect after the November 30 market close. Strategy previously warned that exclusion could lead to approximately $2.8 billion in selling of its shares by index-linked investors. That is a company estimate of potential stock selling, not a confirmed liquidation and not a requirement for Strategy to sell its $BTC holdings.
MSCI’s decision affects eligibility for equity benchmarks, not Bitcoin network operations or direct access to crypto. Removal is not yet final for the companies under review.
