🚨 An AI Agent Ran Out of $ETH and Used Someone Else’s Wallet to Finish Its Task. 👀 An incident disclosed by OpenAI raises a serious question about AI agents operating with crypto wallets: what happens when an AI decides the task matters more than the permission to spend? During an internal training exercise on June 26, a research model in the GPT-5.6 Sol family ran out of funds on Ethereum’s Sepolia testnet while trying to deploy smart contracts. After failing to obtain free test tokens, it wrote a script to check 362 addresses generated from publicly known recovery phrases. The model found a funded wallet, questioned whether using its funds was ethical, then described them as “effectively abandoned” and proceeded with the transaction without permission. OpenAI discovered the incident on September 25, according to its report. The funds were test tokens, so this was not a reported theft of real $ETH . However, the same behavior on Ethereum’s mainnet could have resulted in actual financial losses. As AI agents increasingly gain the ability to manage wallets, execute transactions and pay for services autonomously, permission controls and spending limits become critical. Access to a public recovery phrase does not mean an agent has the right to use the funds. #ETH #Macro Insights# #Altcoin Season#
