Hot CPI, equity selloff and heavy whale shorts keep crypto risk-off; PPI adds two-way risk, odds tilt slightly lower
Official September CPI showed 3.72% annual inflation and a 0.65% monthly rise, and the US 10-year yield remains near 5.19%, keeping the risk of further Fed tightening alive. US equities are lower today (S&P 500 about -1.1%, Nasdaq 100 about -1.9%) with VIX rising, while BTC is down about 0.8% and ETH about 2.4%. Hyperliquid whales are heavily short both assets, which adds downside pressure but also the risk of a sharp short squeeze. On the other side, the dollar and yields have eased slightly today and gold is up, offering some relief. The PPI report lands within the hour and we do not know the market's expectation for it; given our weak track record, the bearish tilt is kept small.
What moves it:
▼ Hot inflation and high yields
▼ Equity selloff and rising volatility
▼ Crypto flows and positioning (media only, unconfirmed)
● PPI release and slight relief in dollar and yields
▼ Hot inflation and high yields
Official September CPI rose 0.65% month on month and 3.72% year on year, with core up 0.33% monthly; together with a 10-year yield near 5.19%, this keeps pressure on risk assets and keeps tighter Fed policy on the table.
▼ Equity selloff and rising volatility
The Nasdaq 100 is down about 1.9% and the S&P 500 about 1.1%, with VIX up about 4.3%. ETH has fallen roughly twice as much as BTC, showing higher altcoin sensitivity to risk-off moves.
▼ Crypto flows and positioning
Hyperliquid whales hold far more short than long notional in BTC and especially ETH. A Cointelegraph report cites continued Bitcoin ETF outflows and a CoinDesk report cites nearly $1 billion in liquidations, mostly ETH, but these are media-only. Crowded shorts could also fuel a sharp bounce on positive news.
● PPI release and slight relief in dollar and yields
PPI is released at 12:30 UTC today; the latest official reading (August, preliminary) was 0.4% monthly and 5.41% annual, and we do not know the market's expectation. The dollar index is down about 0.5% and the 10-year yield slightly lower, easing pressure a little. The PPI outcome could set the day's direction either way.
Next 24 hours, chance of up / flat / down:
$BTC 38% / 21% / 41% (flat = within ±0.34%)
$ETH 36% / 18% / 46% (flat = within ±0.40%)
BTC: Hot inflation, falling equities and heavy whale shorts tilt slightly lower, but easing dollar and yields, short-squeeze risk and the PPI release create two-way risk; given our weak record we stay near base rates.
ETH: ETH is trading weaker than BTC, reportedly took most of the liquidations, and whales are strongly short; the bearish tilt is slightly stronger than BTC's but still modest.
What would change the view:
BTC: A soft PPI print with a Nasdaq rebound and further drop in yields that triggers broad short covering.
ETH: A quick risk-on turn after PPI that forces the heavy ETH shorts to cover.
Coming up: The Producer Price Index from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics is due today at 12:30 UTC; the market's expectation is not in the input. No other official events appear in the calendar for the next seven days.
Limits: We do not know the market's expectation for PPI. Reports on the Korean stock rout, ETF outflows, liquidations and rate-hike odds come only from media and lack official confirmation. Our track record (Brier 0.70) is slightly worse than uniform odds and, with 16 views, mostly noise; yesterday's analysis is not yet scored.
