Position sizing is the most overlooked edge in crypto portfolio management — yet it determines more of your long-run outcome than entry timing ever will.
Most traders size positions by conviction alone. "I really believe in this one" leads to 20-30% allocations that can permanently impair a portfolio on a single bad trade. A more durable framework is volatility-adjusted sizing.
The core idea: allocate capital inversely proportional to an asset's volatility. A $BTC position might carry 2× the size of a $SOL position if BTC's 30-day realized vol is half of SOL's — even if you hold equal conviction. $ETH typically sits between the two, making it a natural portfolio anchor.
This matters more in crypto than in tradfi because correlations spike toward 1.0 during drawdowns. The diversification you think you have evaporates exactly when you need it. Volatility-weighted sizing doesn't fix correlation — but it does mean your highest-volatility bets don't dominate total drawdown.
A simple rule: cap any single position at 1% portfolio daily-value-at-risk. Back-calculate from that constraint, not from "how much do I want to own." Higher-beta altcoins get tighter allocations; lower-vol blue chips get more room.
Size for survival first. Gains follow.
