Is Southeast Asia about to get its own regulated crypto ETF market? 🇹🇭
Thailand's SEC framework for Bitcoin and Ether ETFs takes effect tomorrow, Oct 16. Initial products are limited to $BTC and $ETH only, with funds required to keep average net exposure of at least 80% to the underlying asset. Custody must go through licensed custodians, trading happens exclusively on the Stock Exchange of Thailand, and securities firms are barred from offering margin loans on these products.
Why it matters: Thai mutual funds and private funds will now be allowed to buy locally listed crypto ETFs. Previously they could only touch foreign ETFs, so domestic institutions were effectively spectators. This turns them into potential buyers, a brand-new structural demand channel for BTC and ETH in a region whose regulators have been cautious. The margin ban is a smart guardrail too, keeping leverage-driven blowups fenced off from day one.
Could Bangkok quietly become Asia's next regulated on-ramp after Hong Kong? The phased design is deliberate: depositary receipts linked to foreign crypto ETFs are prohibited at first, and only institutional and ultra-high-net-worth clients can be arranged access to foreign products. Thailand wants the flows captured onshore, on the SET, under its own licensed custodians.
Not financial advice. DYOR.
