During morning gold replay I kept grabbing 1R and shoving the stop to breakeven. On paper it felt “safe.” In the log it killed the trades that later ran toward 2R–3R. Same entry quality; the early scratch turned winners into noise.

So I changed the rule for myself: no auto-breakeven at 1R. Take half at about 2R, leave the rest with structure. Protecting ego at 1R is not the same as managing risk — it just truncates the distribution you built the setup for.
