Awakening the human conscience to the suffering of the Palestinian people.
Amid the noise of the world and the rush of everyday life, we sometimes forget that people are still struggling for the most basic human rights: safety, food, shelter, and the ability to live with dignity.
The suffering of Palestinian civilians is a painful reminder that humanity should not stop at geographical borders or differences in identity. Every child, every mother, and every father deserves safety, dignity, and peace.
We may not have the power to change the entire world, but we can refuse to lose our ability to care. We can resist becoming accustomed to images of suffering, and we can refuse to let silence turn tragedy into something ordinary.
Rejecting injustice, showing compassion for the innocent, and defending human dignity are not signs of weakness. They are signs that we have not abandoned our humanity.
Be a candle in the darkness. You may not be able to stop the storm, but you can refuse to make the darkness darker.
A Dedication to the Reader: Mahmoud Darwish’s Think of Others
This article pays tribute to the Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish and his moving poem Think of Others.
The poem invites us to remember those beyond our immediate lives: when we prepare our breakfast, we should remember those who are hungry; when we live through conflict, we should remember those who long for peace; and when we return to the comfort of our homes, we should remember those who have no home and live in tents.
When we sleep safely, gaze at the stars, or enjoy the freedom to express ourselves, we should also remember those who lack shelter and those who have been denied the right to speak.
The poem ultimately turns our attention inward. As we think of people far away, we should also ask ourselves what we can do for them.
That is the enduring power of Darwish’s message: our own lives may continue, but we must not forget those who are struggling to survive.
A Final Thought
Do not let the constant presence of suffering take away your ability to feel for others.
The world does not need more indifference. It needs more compassion, justice, and respect for human dignity.
Your candle may be small, but it is still a light in a place that needs one.
