Bitcoin$BTC Is 2.5x Bigger Than Bank of America and Bank of China Combined. What the Number Hides.
The headline keeps coming back: Bitcoin's market cap is bigger than Bank of America and Bank of China combined. It's true. What interested me more is how big the gap is.
$BTC trades near $83,700, which gives it a market cap of about $1.68T. Bank of America is near $380B, based on Friday's close. Bank of China depends on which shares you count: roughly $253B using its Hong Kong price, closer to $300B once the pricier mainland shares are included. Together the banks land between $630B and $690B, so Bitcoin is about 2.4 to 2.65 times larger. Bank figures are Friday closes because stock markets were shut over the weekend, while crypto kept trading.
This isn't new either. Bitcoin was already ahead of both banks combined in early 2024. For the comparison to flip today, BTC would need to fall to roughly $31K–$34K.
The part the headline skips is what market cap measures. It shows what the market pays for an asset, not what the asset does. Bank of America runs a balance sheet of around $3.5T and earns income from it. Bitcoin has neither. So the comparison tells you how much value the market assigns to each, not that they're the same kind of thing.
On the chart, $84K is the immediate hurdle, $87.4K is the next target, and $80K is the floor I'm watching. Bank of America reports earnings on October 14, so the bank side of this comparison may shift next week.
The question I'm left with: does Bitcoin's lead still look as clear when you compare what each asset produces, not just what it's priced at?
Not financial advice.
