US GOV JUST MOVED $1 BILLION IN BITCOIN. DUMP INCOMING?
Everyone is panicking about this one, so let's look at the facts.
On October 8, wallets linked to the US government moved 12,267 BTC, about $1.01B, out of a wallet holding coins seized from the 2016 Bitfinex hack (Arkham data). CoinDesk reported the coins went to new, unlabeled addresses. Later tracking by Ember said the full amount reached Coinbase Prime. This came after Galaxy Research traced around 9,261 BTC (~$770M) into the government's Coinbase Prime setup on October 6–7.
Roughly 94,000 $BTC the DOJ recovered in 2022 from Ilya Lichtenstein's wallet. Coinbase Prime is the platform the US Marshals Service picked in 2024 for custody AND trading of seized crypto. No agency has said a word about why.
Why it matters: A deposit to Coinbase Prime does NOT mean a sale. Prime is also a custodian. Trump's March 2025 executive order says forfeited BTC goes into the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and shouldn't be sold. But reserve rules still allow court-ordered and victim-related returns, so some coins could go back to Bitfinex. Arkham shows the government still holds about $25.5B in crypto. Meanwhile real selling did show up elsewhere: BTC spot ETFs lost $681.1M last week.
Market impact: BTC CMP 82,887, +0.4% in 24h. Price has held up OK since the move. The market is treating it as a headline risk, not actual supply, for now.
Short-term (1h–4h):
Hold 82,500 = no panic, range holds
Reclaim 83,500 = squeeze toward 84,400
Long-term (daily/weekly):
Hold 80,000–80,300 = main support, buyers defended it this week
Reclaim 87,300 = breakout, 8-month highs retest
Lose 80,000 on a daily close = 78K, then 75K (30D low ~74,900)
50D avg ~80,900 is the line bulls need to keep.
