Sui wants to turn idle bitcoin into loan collateral without asking holders to send their coins to another chain. Its new protocol, Hashi, debuts with $500 million in capital commitments, per CoinDesk, and mainnet is set to roll out in phases later this month.
📌 The news
Hashi lets bitcoin holders lock BTC in a vault on the Bitcoin network itself. In return, a token called hBTC is minted on Sui, backed one to one by the locked coins. Sui apps can then use hBTC for lending, borrowing and credit products.
Over 20 partners have pledged the $500 million. Anchorage Digital is a launch partner and plans to supply stablecoin liquidity, according to the report. These are commitments, not deposits already sitting in the system.
🔍 How the safety model works
• The vault is controlled by a 2-of-2 multisig, so both Hashi validators must approve any movement
• A separate guardian layer watches collateral flows and can slow down anything suspicious
• To exit, hBTC is burned on Sui, which tells the multisig to release the original BTC
• Certora formally verified the smart contracts, and CommonPrefix reviewed the cryptography behind the signing setup
📊 The numbers
• $500 million in launch commitments
• Sui estimates about $1 trillion in bitcoin sits idle on institutional and corporate balance sheets
• $SUI trades near $1.07, down about 5% in 24 hours but up roughly 30% over 30 days, per CoinGecko
⚖️ Bull vs bear case
Bull: if even a small slice of idle corporate bitcoin moves into Hashi, Sui gains a deep, sticky source of collateral that most chains would love to have.
Bear: bitcoin wrappers have a mixed history. Holders still rely on validators and signing infrastructure, and pledged capital does not always arrive when markets turn risk-off.
👀 What to watch next
• How fast the phased mainnet opens to new depositors
• Whether hBTC supply grows beyond the launch partners
• Borrowing rates on Sui apps once stablecoin liquidity arrives
━━━━━━━━━━━━
💡 My take: Keeping the coins on the Bitcoin network is the right design choice for cautious institutions. The real test is not the launch number but whether hBTC supply is still growing three months from now.
💬 Would you lock BTC in a vault like this to borrow against it?
