BitTorrent Chain ($BTTC ) is a cross-chain interoperability protocol built on TRON that uses Proof of Stake consensus and supports Ethereum-compatible smart contracts. It was designed to let users move assets between Ethereum, TRON, and $BNB Chain, but that core bridge function is no longer operating. The network itself, however, remains live and functional.

The most important recent development is that the BTTC Bridge was officially retired in July 2026 through a planned "sunset program". This initially triggered a security alert from Blockaid, which flagged roughly $13.3 million in assets—including about 7,285 $ETH and multiple ERC-20 tokens—leaving the bridge's Ethereum contracts in a pattern that resembled an exploit. Justin Sun clarified that the transfer was the authorized completion of the shutdown, and Blockaid withdrew its alert after confirming it was an internal operation, not a hack.

The bridge shutdown had been announced weeks earlier, with deposits closing on June 13 and withdrawals ending June 18. Users were told to migrate assets back to their native chains before the deadline. After the sunset, cross-chain transfers are routed through partnered centralized exchanges instead of the on-chain bridge. Critically, the BTTC blockchain itself—including staking, validator operations, block production, and delegation—continues to operate normally.

The network's architecture has three layers: an EVM-compatible PoS chain where transactions occur, a Delivery Layer that synchronizes state to other chains, and a Contract Layer of smart contracts on external chains. Validators stake BTT and run nodes to produce blocks and submit checkpoints, earning rewards for securing the network. The BTT token is used for gas, staking, and governance. Current staking offers up to roughly 6.43% to 6.83% APY.

BTT has a total supply of about 990 trillion tokens following a 2022 redenomination. On-chain data shows the top 10 wallet addresses hold roughly 90% of the supply, though some of that likely reflects exchange custodial wallets rather than individual holders. A significant portion of tokens has also been burned over time. The token has historically been volatile, often tracking broader crypto market sentiment rather than moving on its own protocol developments. With the bridge retired, the BitTorrent team is now focusing on decentralized AI initiatives and maintaining the BitTorrent protocol.
