Something changed in the way this market is moving.
BTC pushed above $86,000 overnight, up about 1.7% in 24 hours. But the more interesting signal isn’t BTC’s move. It’s what happened underneath it.
The Altcoin Season Index climbed to 61 this week, up from 52 just seven days ago. A month ago it sat at 23. Bitcoin dominance slipped to 58.6%. Meanwhile, the total crypto market cap is pressing against $2.96 trillion — within touching distance of $3 trillion for the first time in weeks.
That matters because this isn’t a broad rally. It’s selective. DOGE is up 3.1%, SUI up 2.9%, SOL up 1.2%. But NEAR is down 4.1% and AVAX is down about 1%. The money isn’t moving into everything — it’s rotating into specific pockets while others get left behind.
The derivatives data adds another layer. BTC open interest is near $56 billion, and funding rates on major perpetuals have jumped from around 3% to 10% annualized. Traders are paying more to stay long. That tells me leverage is building, and leverage always cuts both ways.
What I’m watching next: whether BTC can hold above $86,000 while altcoin volume stays elevated. If the index pushes past 70 without BTC losing its footing, the rotation has real legs. If funding keeps climbing while spot volume stays flat, that’s a warning sign.
