Do you also get excited at the start of the week when $XAU breaks last week’s High or Low, immediately jump into a Buy or Sell, and then a few hours later watch the market reverse and hit your Stop Loss?

Traders see a breakout and get emotional, entering a trade because of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). But major Wall Street institutions and algorithms know where retail traders’ Stop Losses are sitting. They can push price through those levels, grab the liquidity, and then drive the market back inside the range!

Today, I’m sharing the verified mathematical data from the last 198 weeks, covering approximately 4 years from September 2022 until the final week of September, that can help you avoid this market trap every week.

The Mathematical Truth of 198 Weeks: What the Chart Is Screaming!

We analyzed detailed hourly XAUUSD data covering 198 weeks from September 2022 to the final week of September. The results are eye-opening:

- At least one side (High or Low) was broken: 174 out of 198 weeks (88%)

- Only the previous week’s High was broken: 99 times

- Only the previous week’s Low was broken: 58 times

- Neither side was broken (Inside Week): 24 times

- Both High and Low were broken: Only 17 times!

Year-by-Year Consistency

The number of weeks where Gold broke both the previous week’s High and Low remained surprisingly low every year:

- 2022: Only 2 out of 16 weeks

- 2023: Only 5 out of 49 weeks

- 2024: Only 4 out of 49 weeks

- 2025: Only 3 out of 48 weeks

- 2026 so far: Only 3 out of 36 weeks

The Bottom Line

Gold usually breaks only ONE side of the previous week’s range.

Breaking both sides happens only around 3–4 times per year.

The Trap: The 41% “Liquidity Sweep” Rule

This is where retail traders can lose the most capital.

When Gold broke the previous week’s High or Low, 72 out of 174 times (41%) the market broke the level and then closed back inside the previous range.

In 2026 so far, this happened 16 out of 31 times.

What Is a Liquidity Sweep?

Retail traders often place Stop Losses just above the previous week’s High or just below the previous week’s Low.

When price briefly moves beyond these obvious levels and then quickly returns inside the range, traders often call it a Liquidity Sweep or Fake Breakout.

The important lesson: Don’t assume every breakout is real.

(Note: Since Gold has generally remained in an uptrend from 2022 to 2026, the High was broken 116 times versus 75 breaks of the Low, which is naturally consistent with a bullish market.)

The 90% Rule: Your “Line in the Sand” for the Week

Here’s one of the most powerful findings in the data:

Once Gold broke one side of the previous week’s range, the opposite side remained intact for the rest of the week 157 out of 174 times — or 90.2%.

That means once one side breaks, the non-breaking side can become your “Line in the Sand” for the week.

If price eventually breaks that opposite side as well, it may be a strong signal that your original weekly market analysis was wrong.

Sunday Night’s 4-Point Game Plan

Before the market opens this Sunday, keep these four steps in mind:

1. Mark the Levels:

Draw the previous week’s High and Low clearly on your chart.

2. Don’t Predict:

Don’t try to guess which side will break first. Let the market make the first move.

3. Wait for Confirmation:

When one side breaks, wait for a candle to close outside the level or look for a successful retest.

4. Identify the Sweep:

If price breaks the level but quickly closes back inside the range, recognize the possibility of a Liquidity Sweep. Don’t rush into a breakout trade. Wait for a clear shift in market structure.

Final Takeaway

Gold takes liquidity from one side of the previous week’s range in most weeks, while breaking both sides is relatively rare.

And around 4 out of every 10 breakouts in this dataset were followed by a return inside the previous range.

So before the market opens this Sunday, mark last week’s High and Low on your chart and let price show you the direction instead of trying to predict it.

Do you mark Weekly High & Low on your charts, or do you trade based mainly on daily price movement?
