Sentiment extremes are some of the most reliable signals in crypto — if you know how to use them.

When the Fear & Greed Index sits in Extreme Fear for 2+ weeks while funding rates on perpetual futures turn deeply negative, the market is telling you something important: traders are aggressively betting on more downside. That crowded short positioning creates fuel for sharp reversals.

The inverse is equally powerful. When Extreme Greed combines with funding rates above +0.1% per 8 hours, leveraged longs are stacked. Any catalyst — a liquidation cascade, macro headline, or simply gravity — can flush them fast.

This matters for $BTC and $ETH especially, because these assets have the deepest perpetual markets where sentiment gets mechanically embedded into funding rates.

Practical framework:
→ Extreme Fear + negative funding = start building, not panicking
→ Extreme Greed + elevated funding = trim exposure, not add
→ Neutral sentiment = trend following works best

Contrarian signals don't give you a precise entry — they give you a probabilistic edge. Stacking them with on-chain accumulation data sharpens the read further.

Sentiment is a tool, not a schedule. The crowd is wrong at the extremes. That's where the opportunity lives.
