The main bottleneck limiting artificial intelligence is changing once again. While people might assume that microchips or the electrical grid are the primary issues, the real hurdle right now is simply getting permission. To put this into perspective, ~75 projects with a combined value of ~$130B faced delays or were completely blocked during Q1 2026. On top of that, New York established the very first statewide moratorium restricting new hyperscaler facilities. When communities push back against development, their concerns are almost exclusively tied to a massive power load being concentrated in one specific area. Opting for a distributed compute footprint that spans across smaller locations or already existing facilities is a practical alternative, as it avoids confronting a community with a drastic, single step change to vote on.
