A New Leader for the Algorand Foundation
The @AlgoFoundation has appointed William Herkelrath as chief executive officer. He formally took over on August 31, succeeding Staci Warden after almost five years in the role.
Herkelrath brings more than 25 years of experience in product, sales, and leadership roles in the FinTech industry, including executive positions at three startups that were acquired by Fortune 500 firms. Most recently, he co-founded K3 Labs, an artificial intelligence automation platform, and previously held leadership positions at blockchain data provider Chainlink and crypto custody firm Curv. Curv was acquired by PayPal in 2021.
@Algorand is a proof-of-stake blockchain used for payments, asset tokenization, and digital identity, founded by cryptographer and Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor Silvio Micali.
Quantum Resistance and Financial Self-Sufficiency
Herkelrath has been clear about what drew him to the role. "Algorand set out to build a quantum resilient world years before most of the industry saw it as a real threat," he said, adding that post-quantum accounts on @Algorand are already live in production. He described his goal as turning that preparation into the standard the wider industry measures itself against.
The @AlgoFoundation has already unveiled a roadmap to make its blockchain broadly quantum-resistant by 2027, with plans to introduce post-quantum accounts, multisignature wallets, and staking support starting in 2026, before expanding protections to core protocol components. Algorand has also executed the first post-quantum transaction on its mainnet using NIST-selected Falcon signatures, demonstrating that quantum-resistant signatures can now protect real digital assets on a live public blockchain.
Beyond the technical agenda, Herkelrath has set a commercial target: making the @AlgoFoundation financially self-sustaining within five years. His appointment accompanies a strategy focused on two fronts: the expansion of institutional business and the positioning of the network against the latent threat of quantum computing.
The foundation also announced changes to its board, with Herkelrath and Alex Fowler joining while Rebecca Rettig and Michael Mosier exit.
