Petrobras brings Cardano on-chain for fuel traceability

@Cardano_CF and Brazilian state energy giant @Petrobras have announced two blockchain applications designed to validate environmental claims and track life-cycle data for renewable fuels. The project, developed in collaboration with PUC-Rio Ledger Labs, targets two specific products: sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and Diesel R, Petrobras' partly renewable diesel made from feedstocks such as vegetable oils and animal fats.

Petrobras is testing the @Cardano blockchain in two research projects to trace environmental claims tied to sustainable aviation fuel and its partly renewable Diesel R. The aviation project aims to prevent companies from counting the same emissions reduction twice, while the diesel project would create a record of the fuel's production, transportation and use to support emissions reporting.

Both projects remain in the research stage, with no disclosed timeline for broader deployment or details about the fuel volumes covered.

A deepening partnership in Brazil's energy sector

The @Cardano_CF announced its collaboration with PUC-Rio, one of the top-ranked universities in Latin America, aimed at advancing research and development in blockchain technology, with a specific focus on blockchain applications within the energy sector. Through this collaboration, the Cardano Foundation supports PUC-Rio's Ledger Labs, a research group dedicated to advancing the use of Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) in business and finance.

"Brazil has been one of the most consistent adopters of Cardano, from SERPRO in government to SENAI in industry. It's great to see Petrobras, one of the largest firms in the region, continue to see value in on-chain provenance and traceability," Frederik Gregaard, chief executive of the Cardano Foundation, told CoinDesk.

The deployment sits squarely inside a growing market. Brazil's oil and gas market, worth $23.67 billion in 2026, is growing at a CAGR of 4.01% and is forecast to reach $28.82 billion by 2031. For @Cardano, securing a foothold in that market through verified, on-chain emissions data represents a meaningful real-world use case at an industrial scale.
