The crypto market is facing another major security wake-up call.
Bitget recently suffered a major security incident in which approximately $387.5 million worth of digital assets were affected. The exchange initially reported a lower figure, but the estimated amount increased after a more complete review of the transactions.
Following the incident, Bitget temporarily suspended withdrawals while its security team investigated the affected wallet infrastructure. The exchange later began a phased restoration of withdrawals, with Bitcoin withdrawals resuming on September 28.
The incident has also attracted attention because more than $50 million of the stolen funds reportedly attempted to move through NEAR Intents, highlighting how difficult it can be to move large amounts of crypto without leaving an on-chain trail.
🔎 What should crypto users learn from this?
Crypto security is not only about choosing the right coin. Exchange security, wallet protection, private-key management and transaction verification are equally important.
Before sending funds, always verify the wallet address and network. Avoid clicking suspicious links, connecting your wallet to unknown websites, or sharing seed phrases and private keys.
The biggest lesson:
Your crypto security is part of your investment strategy.
What do you think?
Can centralized exchanges completely prevent incidents like this, or sho$uld users keep more funds in self-custody?
