The U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve has fallen to 283.8 million barrels, down from roughly 406 million a year ago and below 40% of its 714 million-barrel capacity.
The decline follows a 172 million-barrel emergency release authorized in March, part of a coordinated response to Middle East oil-supply disruptions. The barrels are structured as an exchange and are expected to be returned later.
