Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin used his keynote at the 12th Global Blockchain Summit in Shanghai on September 23 to deliver a pointed warning: the privacy assumptions that blockchain was built on are eroding, and the industry needs a fundamentally different approach.

Pseudonymity Is No Longer Enough

For years, separating a real name from a public wallet address was considered a reasonable baseline for onchain privacy. Buterin argues that baseline no longer holds. Speaking at the summit, Buterin said keeping real names separate from transactions is no longer enough for onchain privacy in the AI era.

Buterin compared public blockchains to "Twitter for your bank account," a phrase used by Zooko Wilcox, the creator of Zcash. He warned that powerful AI and data analysis tools can make public blockchain information much easier to study. Public blockchains expose transaction activity by default, and balances, transaction history, and other financial activity can reveal plenty even when a user's real name is not directly attached.

In earlier remarks from August 2026, Buterin had already laid the intellectual groundwork for this shift, asserting that the blockchain ecosystem needed to treat AI-driven deanonymization as a first-order threat rather than a theoretical concern. His Summit speech reinforced that urgency with a clear call for the industry to move beyond basic payment systems toward applications that can maintain meaningful privacy even under adversarial AI analysis.

The Case for Programmable Privacy

Buterin called for SNARKs, STARKs, and homomorphic encryption at the summit, warning that AI has broken blockchain's privacy and that fixing it requires an entirely new cryptographic toolkit. He specifically highlighted SNARKs, STARKs, fully homomorphic encryption (FHE), and indistinguishability obfuscation as the key tools capable of delivering that outcome.

Buterin proposed a programmable cryptography model to restrict access to sensitive data beyond mere transfers. Such systems could allow users to set rules governing who can access transaction-related data, shifting blockchain privacy beyond simply hiding identities and toward controlling who can view and analyze financial activity.

Privacy is being folded into Ethereum's roadmap alongside quantum security, native rollups, and scalable infrastructure. Buterin's remarks signal that for $ETH and the broader ecosystem, privacy is no longer a niche concern but a core protocol priority.
