Bitcoin could be getting a major privacy upgrade. 👀
Researchers have proposed Shielded Bitcoin, a system designed to bring Zcash-style private transfers to $BTC without changing Bitcoin’s main consensus rules.
Normally, Bitcoin transactions are public. Wallet addresses, transaction amounts, and the movement of funds can be tracked on the blockchain.
With Shielded Bitcoin, users could first move BTC into a private layer where the value is represented as encrypted notes. When someone sends funds, a zero-knowledge proof would confirm that the transaction is valid and that the sender actually owns the BTC, without publicly revealing who sent it, who received it, or how much was transferred.
Bitcoin would still record and order the transaction data, while the privacy layer would handle the hidden balances and verify which private funds have already been spent.
This could give Bitcoin users stronger privacy without requiring them to move into a separate privacy coin like Zcash.
The biggest challenge is still getting BTC safely into and out of the shielded system without creating obvious links between deposits and withdrawals. Some metadata, such as timing and fees, could also remain visible.
If researchers solve those problems, Bitcoin could gain much stronger privacy while keeping its core network unchanged. 🔥
