Hedera Steps Into UK's Tokenization Push
Hedera has joined the UK's Wholesale Digital Markets Champion Taskforce, a government-backed initiative examining how tokenized financial markets can be scaled across Britain. The taskforce is led by Christopher Woolard CBE and supported by HM Treasury, with Hedera bringing its expertise in interoperability and settlement finality to the group.
The initiative sits within a broader national effort. In April 2026, the UK government appointed Woolard, a former interim chief executive of the Financial Conduct Authority and currently a partner at EY, as Wholesale Digital Markets Champion. His remit is to coordinate industry and government on the development of a tokenized wholesale financial markets ecosystem. A 54-firm cross-industry taskforce, which now includes Hedera, was convened alongside the publication of Woolard's inaugural report to Chancellor Rachel Reeves in July 2026.
That report framed tokenization as a meaningful economic lever. Officials project that the UK could add up to £33 billion in annual economic output by 2035 if it moves decisively on digital market infrastructure. Woolard has described tokenized markets as a network game that rewards early movers.
Hedera's Track Record in UK Regulated Finance
Hedera is not new to UK institutional finance. In July 2025, Lloyds Banking Group, Aberdeen Investments, and FCA-regulated exchange Archax completed what they described as the UK's first FX trades using tokenized real-world assets as collateral, settled on the Hedera network. The collateral included tokenized money market fund units and UK gilts. HM Treasury's Wholesale Digital Markets Champion report later cited the trade as an exemplary industry achievement.
Within the taskforce, Hedera's focus will be on practical use cases, clear delivery timelines, and the role of public blockchain infrastructure in supporting wholesale market activity. The group is expected to prioritize tokenized repo as its first live end-to-end use case, with Woolard due to deliver a fuller report on DLT adoption and interoperability standards to the Chancellor by July 2027.
