Bitcoin Spot ETFs Log Massive $1B Single-Day Inflow as BTC Threatens $86,000
US-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded nearly $1 billion in net inflows on Monday, marking the largest single-day institutional intake since last October.
The surge in fund flows accompanied a broader market rebound. Bitcoin hovered near $86,000 after bouncing back from an Asian-session trough around $85,000, capitalizing on Monday’s decisive break above its May peak. Concurrently, the CoinDesk 20 Index advanced 2.2% over the same 24-hour window.
Institutional Flows Provide Long-Awaited Spot Confirmation
The billion-dollar influx answers the most pressing question surrounding Bitcoin’s recent price action. Prior to this week, the rally from sub-$75,000 levels was primarily fueled by derivatives liquidations—including a massive $300 million short wipeout in just one hour on Monday—rather than authentic spot market buying.
Up until this point, CryptoQuant’s spot demand indicator sat at -145,000 BTC. Analysts, including Nexo Dispatch’s Ilya Kalchev, had emphasized that sustained ETF inflows or a revival in organic spot demand were essential to validate the breakout.
Monday’s $1 billion inflow represents the strongest single-day institutional backing since October, outstripping the $731 million mark seen on September 3 (which subsequently reversed into a $450 million outflow on September 15 following the failure of the Clarity Act). However, market observers caution that one day of high volume does not equal a long-term trend; the coming sessions will determine whether this represents the start of sustained buying or merely a isolated spike.
Clearing the May Peak Opens the Road, but Resistance Looms
By pushing past its May high, Bitcoin cleared a major technical threshold that analysts had flagged for months. LMAX Group’s Joel Kruger had previously noted that a clean breakout above $82,820 (the May peak) was required to validate the macro recovery and open a pathway toward $100,000—a level Bitcoin had previously failed to conquer during a September 4 rejection at $82,284.
This move also absorbed the dense supply node between $80,000 and $82,000, an area holding nearly 8% of circulating supply and representing the cost basis for much of the US spot ETF cohort.
However, the next technical hurdle is immediately ahead. According to Glassnode’s Frederik Theissen, a concentration of long-term holder supply sits between $83,000 and $86,000. At current levels, Bitcoin is testing the upper boundary of this band, where investors who acquired coins in this range may seek to exit at breakeven after months in drawdown.
Macro Relief: Hormuz Developments Cool Oil Prices
Geopolitical shifts provided a macro tailwind for risk assets. WTI crude oil declined over 2% to drop below $90 per barrel, retreating further from its recent peak of $106. The drop followed reports from Kyodo indicating Iran’s potential willingness to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if US blockade pressure eases.
This development marks a structural pivot compared to earlier speculative headlines. Softening diplomatic tones—including statements from President Trump indicating a likelihood of meeting Iran's leadership—have significantly trimmed the geopolitical risk premium. A potential resolution at Hormuz alleviates physical supply bottlenecks that had constrained Saudi output to 6.238 million barrels per day (its lowest level since 1990) and driven tanker charter rates above $1 million daily.
Softening energy prices temper broader inflationary pressures, reducing the incentive for aggressive Federal Reserve rate hikes. Current Fed dot plots project just one additional rate hike in 2026. FxPro chief market analyst Alex Kuptsikevich noted that declining oil prices, easing Treasury yields, firming global equities, and constructive US-China dialogue collectively bolstered market-wide risk appetite, evidenced by a sharp rally in the Nasdaq.
Derivatives Point to Continued Short-Squeezing
While ETF figures show clear spot accumulation, futures market data presents a more nuanced narrative:
Volume vs. Open Interest: Total crypto futures volume jumped 38% to $292 billion over 24 hours, whereas open interest (OI) grew by just 1% to $157 billion. This pushed the volume-to-OI ratio to nearly 2.
Liquidations: Total liquidations reached $768 million over the period, heavily tilted toward short positions.
Cumulative Volume Delta (CVD): Major assets—including BTC, ETH, XRP, and SOL—all posted negative 24-hour OI-adjusted cumulative volume deltas, indicating that aggressive market selling outweighed market buying even as spot prices climbed (with Tron as a rare exception).
This divergence highlights a two-tiered market: regulated spot ETF buyers are accumulating assets on-chain, while leveraged traders on derivatives exchanges are actively covering short positions. Bitcoin futures open interest rose to 716,000 BTC—its highest reading since August 25, though still beneath the 750,000 BTC average maintained between April and July. Meanwhile, Ether and Solana open interest remain stuck in a broader downtrend dating back to May, despite ETH outperforming BTC this quarter.
Memecoin Surge Serves as a Cautionary Signal
As Bitcoin's spot advance paused, speculative capital rotated into high-beta assets. PEPE, DOGE, and SHIB ranked among the top 10 performance leaders over the 24-hour period. Dogecoin registered a 10% single-day jump in open interest, the highest increase among top-10 crypto assets. Historically, rapid spikes in memecoin leverage have often signaled short-term market overheating.
Elsewhere in altcoins, XRP open interest expanded 12%, rising from 2.2 billion to 2.46 billion tokens. Positioning data from Coinglass shows institutional "whale" sentiment leaning heavily bullish on Bitcoin, moderately bullish on Ether and Solana, and net-bearish on XRP, Dogecoin, and physical gold.
Options Markets Eye $90,000 and $95,000 Targets
Despite the price expansion, options implied volatility remains moderate. The 30-day BVIV and EVIV metrics continue to trade well below their previous highs from February and early June.
Analysis from Laser Digital reveals that the volatility skew has flattened since last week as realized volatility picked up alongside a positive spot-volatility correlation—a regime where volatility expands as prices rise, typical of sustained bull trends.
Deribit front-end risk reversals swung sharply toward Bitcoin and Ether call options on Monday as BTC crossed $85,000, though this call skew has softened slightly since. The most heavily traded Bitcoin option contracts over the past 24 hours focused on the $90,000 and $95,000 call strikes, while Ether traders targeted calls in the $2,500 to $3,000 range. Both key Bitcoin strikes sit above the asset's 100-week moving average, which currently resides near $89,000.
Governance Milestone: ZetaChain Votes to Sunset Blockchain
In an uncommon governance outcome, ZetaChain token holders voted overwhelmingly on Sunday to decommission their Layer-1 network and migrate the native ZETA token over to Solana. The proposal passed with over 99% approval on 58% voter turnout, comfortably exceeding the 40% quorum requirement. A final implementation vote remains before execution.
Launched in 2023 with $27 million in venture funding, ZetaChain was designed to enable cross-chain interoperability. However, intense market competition in the cross-chain sector paired with operational overhead led to the decision. ZetaChain currently ranks 313th by market cap at approximately $90 million.
The development team cited high maintenance costs associated with its Cosmos SDK foundation, which required constant security patching across independent validator sets. (Cosmos Labs disclosed exploits across six affiliated chains in August totaling $6 million in losses, though ZetaChain itself was unaffected).
Under the new plan, the team will pivot toward Anuma, an AI contextual protocol launched in February that boasts over 300,000 users. ZETA tokens will be locked for usage credits within Anuma, transitioning the asset from a consensus security token into an application utility token. Following the news, ZETA doubled from $0.04 to $0.07 before pulling back 16% to trade just under $0.06. Trading volume crossed $117 million in 24 hours, exceeding the token's entire market capitalization.
