Hong Kong’s HKD stablecoin, HKDAP, is now being used for something much bigger than simple payments.
On September 18, OSL, China Asset Management (Hong Kong), and Standard Chartered completed a reported first-of-its-kind transaction where HKDAP was used to subscribe for and redeem units of a digital-asset market fund.
🔥 Why I think this is interesting
• HKDAP is expanding beyond everyday payment use
• Stablecoins are slowly becoming part of investment fund operations
• OSL handled the transaction through its licensed exchange
• Standard Chartered provided custody services
• The main focus is currently on institutional and professional investors
• It also supports Hong Kong’s wider push toward tokenized financial infrastructure
But the bigger picture here isn't only about HKDAP.
If stablecoins can eventually be used across payments, settlements, fund operations, and other parts of the financial system, they could become an important piece of the future capital-market infrastructure.
Hong Kong seems to be taking a more regulated, institution-focused route instead of rushing straight into mass retail adoption.
👀 So here's the interesting part:
Will this slower and more regulated approach give HKD stablecoins a stronger foundation over time?
Or will USD-based stablecoins move faster and capture these financial use cases before HKD stablecoins get there?
