Linera is winding down. An a16z-backed Layer 1 that raised $12M is stopping before it ever reached mainnet.

1. The money was there once. A $6M seed led by a16z in 2022, another $6M led by Borderless Capital in 2023. Backing was never the problem.

2. The last raise missed. A community round on Sonar targeted $1.5M and closed at $848,271 from 617 participants, roughly 57% of the minimum. Below threshold means the sale does not close, so contributions were refunded.

3. Emergency financing was the fallback, and it did not arrive. The team was explicit that the decision came down to funding, not the technology or the people.

4. Two rounds three years apart is a long runway by crypto standards. It still ran out before shipping.

The part worth carrying forward: tech risk gets all the attention, runway risk decides more outcomes. When you follow a pre-mainnet project, the useful question is not only what they are building, but how many months of payroll sit behind it.

Not financial advice. Do your own research.
