$ZEC is getting a major speed upgrade, and November could be an important month for Zcash. The upcoming NU7 upgrade is targeting Nov. 5 and would cut Zcash’s block time from 75 seconds to just 25 seconds, making shielded payments roughly three times faster at the network level. But the bigger change goes beyond speed. NU7 introduces a Network Sustainability Mechanism that would set aside roughly 60% of transaction fees and begin returning them to miners from February 2031, helping supplement mining rewards as Zcash moves through future halvings. What makes this interesting is that the upgrade keeps Zcash’s core privacy advantage intact: shielded transactions can hide the sender, recipient and amount from the public blockchain. Around 2.4M ZEC participated in the community vote, with 98.9% supporting the existing halving schedule and 96.6% backing February 2031 for the fee mechanism. For me, the key question is whether faster private payments can make Zcash more practical for real-world use while preserving its privacy-first design.
